About Bondrail
Who We Are
Bondrail is building Canada's first digital customs bond platform, based in Calgary, Alberta. We publish guides, tools, and information to help Canadian importers navigate customs bonds, CARM (CBSA Assessment and Revenue Management), and financial security requirements.
Our goal is to make the customs bond process transparent, fast, and accessible, especially for small and mid-sized importers who are currently underserved by legacy brokers.
What We're Building
We are building a bonding operating system for Canadian importers:
- Get bond-ready: Structured intake, financial document collection, and compliance checklists that prepare importers before they apply.
- Get pre-qualified: Automated underwriting data collection and capacity estimation so importers know their bonding limits upfront.
- Streamline bond issuance: Once the relationship is established, recurring bond issuance should be simple, not a multi-day process every time.
Today, bondrail.ca is an educational resource. We publish comprehensive guides on customs bonds, CARM compliance, and importing into Canada. Our duty calculator helps importers estimate their financial security requirements. Everything we publish is free and based on official CBSA and CRA sources.
The Team
Bondrail was founded by Benji Visser, a founder based in Calgary and an alumnus of Y Combinator (S23). At YC, Benji built Xeol, a cybersecurity company. He went on to build Frontier HSA, a health spending account platform for Canadian businesses. His background is in building products in regulated, complex industries and making them simple for small businesses.
The customs bond market in Canada has the same structural problem Benji has seen before: fragmented brokers, no digital tools, opaque pricing, and small businesses getting the worst service. Bondrail applies the same approach (technology, transparency, and focus on underserved segments) to surety bonds.
Our Approach
We believe in building in the open. Everything we know about customs bonds in Canada, we publish. Our guides are sourced from official CBSA and CRA documentation, the Customs Act, and real industry knowledge. We update our content as regulations change.
We are not a licensed insurance brokerage yet, but that is coming. In the meantime, we are proving demand, building the best educational resource in the market, and developing the technology platform that will power digital bond issuance in Canada.
Commercial Disclosure
Bondrail intends to earn commissions on customs bond placements. We are transparent about this: our recommendations reflect what we genuinely believe is best for importers, and we are upfront about how we plan to make money. Our educational content is free and will remain free regardless of whether you use our future bonding service.
